I loathe school work for my six year old. I think childhood is for playing and exploring our creativity, but alas the state curriculum says otherwise.
Lucky for us, my son’s year 1 teacher is incredible, amazing, fabulous, and down right awesome (yep you got it, I loves her!), and she deems weekends to be school free time for kiddies to have fun (best advice ever!).
Better yet, she makes learning fun! I wanted to share her eight tips for helping kiddies with reading at home.
1. HELPFUL KANGAROO
Ask for help after you have tried everything else.
2. SKIPPY FROG
Skip the word. Read to the end of the sentence. Hop back and read it.
3. CHUNKY MONKEY
Look for chunks in the words.
4. EAGLE EYE
Look at the pictures
5. LIPS THE FISH
Get your mouth ready to say the word. Read to the end of the sentence, then go back and try again.
6. STRETCHY SNAKE
S-T-R-E-T-C-H it out! Stretch the words out slowly. Put the sounds together.
7. TRYIN’ LION
Try a word that makes sense. TRY again and again until it works.
8. FLIPPY DOLPHIN
Flip the vowel sounds! Make a short sound into a long sound. Make a long sound into a short sound. It should make sense.
